In northern California, last week reportedly saw the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of the Chico Rancheria ink a gambling compact with state officials who could eventually clear the way for it to begin construction of a new Class III aboriginal casino.
Rural website chosen:
According to a Monday report by the Chico Enterprise-Record paper, the federally-recognized tribe wishes to build its own casino on 627 acres of rural property in Butte County approximately ten kilometers south east of the city of Chico. The streamlined signed by California Governor, Jerry Brown, on August 9 would make it possible for this planned tribal place to feature gambling tables and up to 2,000 slots but prohibit drama by anyone under the age of 21.
Tribe hoping to accelerate passage:
The paper reported that the streamlined nonetheless needs to be ratified by both houses of the California State Legislature and the tribe is trying to quicken this process by asking Butte County’s Board of Supervisors to sign a letter in support of the envisioned project.
The Chico Enterprise-Record noted that this communication also asks local officials ‘to enter into a memorandum of understanding’ together with all the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of the Chico Rancheria to be able to ‘fairly and adequately’ mitigate ‘off-reservation affects ’ connected to the construction and functioning of this aboriginal casino.
Signing follows legal conflict:
But it remains unclear whether the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of the Chico Rancheria will get such backing given that the prior 16 years saw local officials invest some $850,000 fighting efforts to bring a casino to Butte County.
Indianz.com reported that the judgment saw Butte County decline further review of the matter, which left the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of the Chico Rancheria free to negotiate its streamlined with officials at Sacramento.
Compact includes ‘comparable ’ terms to predecessors:
A Thursday announcement from 80-year-old Brown cited by Indianz.com comprehensive that the ‘core sentences ’ contained inside the agreement that his office agreed with the tribe ‘are much like those in recent compacts’ and encircle revenue sharing, labour, health and safety, environmental protection and regulatory issues.
Brown’s announcement reportedly read…
“The provisions are intended to provide the [Mechoopda Indian Tribe of the Chico Rancheria] together with the flexibility to come up with a new gaming facility that creates revenue for tribal government programs while ensuring that impacts on the community are suitably mitigated. ”
