In southern California, Wednesday allegedly watched the city council for Ridgecrest narrowly ratify three alterations to the little community’s municipal services agreement with the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe.
Amendments followed objections:
According to a Friday report from The Daily Independent paper, the acceptance is a further step ahead in an effort from the federally-recognized tribe to deliver a 29 million casino to an off-reservation site near the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake.
The paper reported that the alterations were necessitated following objections from many residents of the Kern County city that the construction of this a 20,000 sq feet gambling facility would lead to a growth in the demand for clean water in the arid region and possibly understand the place used for the cultivation of marijuana.
Provisions designed to Deal with resistance:
The Daily Independent reported that the first amendment to the municipal services agreement has witnessed the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe agree to waive a number of its tribal sovereign immunity by entering into a deal with the Indian Wells Valley Groundwater Authority and also make its coming casino subject for this organization’s regulations and fees.
To allay any concerns that the tribe plans to grow bud in Kern County, the municipal services agreement also now includes a provision which outlaws the cultivation of such a crop at the casino that is planned.
Finally, The Daily Independent reported that the third change specifies that the area’s tribal-city advisory committee is not required to meet before the United States Department of the Interior takes the territory for the planned casino to trust on behalf of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. However, the change further afield that this group must meet quarterly following such an option unless the two parties specifically cancel the experience.
Contentious council meeting:
The paper reported that the five-member Ridgecrest City Council approved the trio of alterations by three votes to two in a contentious council meeting that watched both casino opponents and supporters make lengthy and impassioned remarks.
George Gholson, Chairperson for the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, advised those that had assembled to the council meeting that the revised agreement gives Ridgecrest ‘exactly what you guys asked for. ’ He also announced that his tribe is made up of ordinary people which are attempting to do the right thing before refuting claims that members have been involved with crime or part of the ‘indie-mafia.
