Owners of Mount Airy Casino Resort in Monroe County filed on Friday an application to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to build and operate a mini-casino in Big Beaver, Beaver County, local news outlet the Times Online reported earlier today.
Officials to the existing casino bought this past August 100 acres of bare land just off Interstate 376 in which they intend to construct the new mini-casino. Developers affirmed on Friday that they have filed the official application on the state’s gambling regulator and with this, the process for final acceptance has begun. Mount Airy owners expected to break ground on their new home in ancient 2019.
Under the terms of its license, it will have to build a gambling venue with 750 slot machines and 30 table games. The construction of several mini-casinos around Pennsylvania comes as part of a sweeping gambling reform the state Legislature declared last fall. The reform also includes the legalization of online gambling and sports gambling.
Commenting on the latest events, Vincent Jordan, Vice President for Marketing and Gaming Operations for Mount Airy, told local press that they had been excited to have begun the formal process which would allow them to start the mini-casino as early as late 2019. Mr. Jordan further noted that while due diligence is underway, they are excited to be working with the sponsor community on job training and other associated partnerships.
The mini-casino program will be completed in 2 stages, it is now clear. The first phase will involve the structure of the true casino and also of restaurants. The next phase will expand the offering with much more entertainment opportunities.
Mount Airy has stated that the first phase will make 300 construction projects and between 400 and 500 permanent full-time projects once it becomes operational. The next phase is estimated to generate an extra 200 to 300 jobs once completed and an undetermined number of temporary jobs during construction.
Mount Airy officials also have stated they will be in Beaver County the forthcoming week to start discussions with workforce development and training partners.
As for the application, the gaming board has explained it will probably take a few weeks before it will become available for public review. The gambling regulator will have to examine it for completeness and redact any private pieces of information. A public hearing is to be held in Big Beaver, but gaming board officials also have stated the date and exact place are yet to be determined and declared.
