Noting that his firm has worked closely with relevant industry associations on the issue, Wilson commented:
“We don’t even think that FIFA Ultimate Team or loot boxes are betting since players always obtain a specified number of items in each pack, and secondly we don’t supply or authorize any means to cash out or sell items or digital money for real cash. ”
Wilson has good cause for concern — the games are among its biggest money makers, also helped to boost its earnings to $1.25 billion in Q1-2018. However, he can point to the contradictory remarks of the authorities in New Zealand and Great Britain, that have opined that loot boxes aren’t gaming per se.
