From the Philippines, the plan which could have observed Galaxy Entertainment Group Limited construct a $500 million integrated casino resort on the small island of Boracay has allegedly been dealt another serious blow and is presently confronting an unpromising future.
According to a report from Inside Asian Gambling citing an earlier story from the Business Mirror paper, President Rodrigo Duterte shut the 2,550-acre island to all tourists and programmers for six months by the end of April to ensure its sewerage infrastructure may be updated. This closure was followed closely by a proclamation from the 73-year-old leader the area located some 196 miles south of Manila was designated as a ‘property reform region ’ post-cleanup with local farmers being gifted their own plots.
Fruitless provisional license:
Galaxy Entertainment Group Limited had earlier received provisional consent for the 1,000-room Boracay job from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation regulator and had expected to begin welcoming guests as ancient as 2021. Butthis deadline is now in tatters after previous week watched local officials ask the body to cancel each of the island’s gaming licenses such as the draft permission that had been granted to the Hong Kong-recorded operator.
Ask for a casino-free island:
Inside Asian Gaming reported that the request from three members of this Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force would hit the gaming services offered by the island’s Crown Regency Resort and Convention Center, Savoy Hotel Boracay, Paradise Garden Resort Hotel and Convention Center, Movenpick Resort and Spa and Hotel Soffia Boracay. The appeal sent straight to Andrea Domingo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, purportedly asked the regulator to cancel ‘all gaming businesses and/or provisional licenses’ in order to guard ‘one of our state ’s most treasured islands. ’
Strategy was for a ‘low-density environment’:
Lui Che Woo, Chairman for Galaxy, said in August that he was ‘quite convinced ’ about being allowed to construct an integrated casino resort on Boracay. He declared that the envisioned development could be ‘a low-density environment’ such as those seen from the Maldives rather than ‘a big casino floor such as in Manila or other places which are dense or occupied. ’
Woo commented…
“After Galaxy Entertainment Group Limited negotiated with the Philippines authorities, our plans were to turn Boracay to a worldwide acclaimed island. We want to lure high-end customers to come and enjoy and to help the Philippines lift its standing. It is not the top-tier natural scenic location it once was due to pollution and sub-standard facilities. ”
