Casino Program promises $1.5 billion in Donations for Southwest Virginia
A prominent Virginia family base formally opposed the planned building of a $150-million casino hotel in town of Bristol. Casino-style gambling is currently prohibited in the country, and the group has historically opposed any efforts for gambling growth over the years.
In an emailed statement to neighborhood information outlet the Bristol Herald Courier, Victoria Cobb, President of The Family Foundation of Virginia, stated that the company is currently condemning the planned job and the rest of the attempts that involve growth of gambling in the state.
Back in September, local businessmen Jim McGlothlin and Clyde Stacy declared plans to convert the empty Bristol Mall into a resort that will feature a casino, hotel, and conference centre, among other facilities.
In a letter to the Bristol Herald Courier from earlier this week, Ms. Cobb stated a casino in Bristol will just bring “dependence, poverty, higher crime, prostitution, sex trafficking, drugs, diminished poverty worth, etc., & rdquo;
The letter went on to see using a debt of $125 million and a decreasing population, the city is now “the ideal sufferer ” to both businessmen.
Last month, the Bristol City Council voted to give its support to the undertaking, if the Virginia General Assembly amends the state’s current gambling laws to permit casino-style gambling.
In a written announcement, the team behind the Bristol Resort and Casino plan stated that the land will create multiple tasks and much-needed revenue for town and will annually bring millions of visitors.
Developers stated that the resort will generate more than 5,200 “good jobs” within the first seven years of operation. In previous comments on the expected benefits from the building of the house, it’s been pointed out that it’s expected to generate $26.8 million in annual tax revenue for the host community. The economic impact for the Southwest Virginia region is expected to reach $1.5 billion annually seven of their casino hotel ’s performance.
The group behind the scheme said earlier this week they are well aware of how the opening of casino might result in an increase in crime as a result of high volume of visitors the place is expected to handle. But it pointed out that the gaming center will only represent a tiny section of the whole resort and it will be located in a separate building where it wouldn’t be able to be accessed by kids.
Casino promoters also stated they will police diligently problems involving drug use or prostitution and will provide individuals suffering from or at risk of developing gambling dependence with counselling services.
As stated earlier, it’s currently up to the Virginia Legislature to determine whether casino-style gambling should be authorized on the state’s land . Lawmakers have struck down previous gambling expansion efforts, but the major economic impact the Bristol endeavor promises could alter their minds this time. Legislators are set to convene to their next semester in January.
