In today’s remarks, Mr. Guevarra noted that President Duterte gets the power and tools to prohibit casinos from working on the island, which was recently reopened following a two-year ecological cleanup. However, the Justice Secretary added that an EO remains a measure he highly recommends as it “sets a long-term policy and offers a formal framework for all government activities of interest to the issue matter.
With his newest remarks, Mr. Guevarra reiterated his opinion on the problem. Boracay has been one of the most popular tourism areas in the Philippines. Based on official figures, the island has annually welcomed more than 2 million tourists within the past several decades.
The island was shuttered in late April to get a two-year ecological cleanup, after the publication of an environmental review of the island back in February. Enraged by these findings, President Duterte known as the island a cesspool and ordered its closure for a period of six months, during which an environmental cleanup could be completed.
