Unionized employees at MGM Resorts International’s 10 Las Vegas possessions will vote Tuesday, June 19, on a new five-year contract, the conditions of which they agreed with all the casino firm earlier this month following prolonged negotiations that might have culminated in a citywide strike.
The new contract covers 24,000 unionized employees employed across MGM’s casino hotels around the city. Thousands of Caesars employees approved similar contract terms last Thursday to complete months of discussions. While more thorough facts about the deal between the casino operator and its employees were not disclosed, the new contract was described as the greatest one ever reached.
Agents from Las Vegas’ UNITE HERE Bartenders and Culinary Unions stated the Caesars arrangement was very similar to the one negotiated with MGM.
Unionized employees at MGM’s Las Vegas possessions will vote Tuesday on a proposed wage growth as well as on different measures aimed at ensuring better protection in the office. Geoconda Argüello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union, formerly clarified the new MGM contract included languages addressing sexual harassment, safety, and immigration problems , among other things.
Under the new arrangement, employees will be trained to report sexual harassment incidents correctly and in a timely way. The city’s labour unions called for new policies after several sexual misconduct allegations emerged against casino boss Steve Wynn back in January.
As per a poll performed by the city’s Bartender and Culinary Unions earlier this season, around 59 percent of all interviewed cocktail servers and 27% of all interviewed housekeepers at casino hotels had been sexually harassed by guests, members of management teams, along with other individuals.
As stated previously, the new contract also aims to address safety concerns raised by employees in the wake of the October 1 fatal shooting where a lone gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of MGM’s Mandalay Bay into a bunch of people, killing 58 and injuring more than 500 others. Under the newly negotiated conditions, housekeeping employees will be provided using wireless apparatus to alert safety about any potential risks and dangers.
It is also known that employees and MGM have negotiated contract terms that could protect immigrant employees who have temporary protected status or Dreamer visas.
The new contract, if approved by a majority in the upcoming Tuesday vote, will pay for 24,000 unionized employees in the major gaming and hospitality company.
The contract will apply retroactively from June 1, because employees ’ previous contracts expired on May 31. Last month, a citywide employees ’ vote approved the unions they were represented by to call a hit if no agreements have been reached with town ’s casino hotel operators. Unions are currently negotiating new contracts with smaller companies that own around 15 properties both on the Las Vegas Strip and from town ’s downtown.
