The call for tender for a casino concession in the site of former Ellinikon International Airport near Athens is ready to become printed in the Official Journal of the European Union after multiple flaws, the Tornos News reports citing information obtained by Greek paper Naftemporiki.
Based on media reports, the invitation for bids will be released at the end of the week following the Hellenic Gambling Commission ironed out details surrounding the bidding process this past Friday and finalized the text of the real call.
The book of said text will open a 60-day bidding window during which interested casino businesses will be able to submit their applications for the only gaming license granted by the Greek gaming regulator. Bidders will enter the race to the development and operation of a casino that’ll be a part of a larger integrated hotel in the website of the former global airport near the Greek capital.
The Hellenic Gambling Commission opened last summer a consultation period, inviting curious operators to offer comments and suggestions concerning the bidding process and about their vision of their future casino.
The tender will allegedly include the minimum concession bidding curious operators will need to place in addition to terms for the obligations to be made. The casino is considered instrumental for the entire integrated resort in the website of the former airport.
In accordance with previous announcements made in connection to the massive project, the casino will cost €1 billion. Here it is essential to note that besides a gaming center, the concession that will be awarded by the Hellenic Gambling Commission will also include authorization for the development of a hotel, a conference center, an event place, and a number of different facilities. The concession will cover 20 hectares of this 620 hectare plot designated for the entire megaresort scheme.
Greek firm Lamda Development was previously selected as the preferred developer of a gigantic €8 billion integrated resort in the website of the former airport. The project is part of Greece’s privatization program meant to increase funds to help the country scale a crippling debt.
The Hellinikon project (as referred to by developers) will observe the development of a massive complex that aside from a casino hotel, will include residential areas, resorts, shopping centers, entertainment places , museums, health and health centers, a park, and a number of different facilities.
The megaresort is expected to create 75,000 jobs once fully operational and also to draw 1 million global visitors per year. The project is spearheaded by a consortium of Chinese, UAEGreek shareholders.
