Sheldon Adelson is looking to expand his business to North Korea, the casino mogul himself said during a recent event in Jerusalem.
The company operates multiple integrated resort properties in Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore, and is eyeing growth across new markets.
Late last month, Mr. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, attended and were one of the speakers at an event organized by Taglit-Birthright Israel, a not-for-profit educational organization that provides free trips to Israel to young adults of Jewish origin to strengthen their individuality. The Adelsons are one of the chief sponsors of the organization. Before this year, the businessman and his wife pledged $70 million to Birthright, the largest ever donation the trigger has received because it was founded in 1999.
The billionaire family were one of the guests in Birthright’s event in Jerusalem. Mr. Adelson started his address before Jewish young adults attending the event stating that he wasn’t increased in Israel and did not serve in the country’s army. He went on to mention that he was actually a Korea veteran and that he hoped US President Donald Trump would get “North and South Korea finish the warfare ” so that he could go back there again. The businessman also pointed out that this time he would not fight but would preferably “open [his] company ”.
Mr. Adelson was one of the main sponsors of President Trump’s 2016 presidential effort. Together with the United States’ top official formerly being a casino proprietor, he is a long-time friend of the Las Vegas casino mogul.
Reports emerged before this historical meeting between President Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un on June 12 in Singapore which Korea had suggested the US help it build a casino hotel as a portion of a previously proposed strategy for the establishment of an global tourist destination in Wonsan-Kalma.
The strategy was first introduced by North Korea’s leader late last year. It involves the development of an global tourist-friendly resort on the Wonsan-Kalma coast.
Mr. Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands has been looking to expand its operations outside of its existing markets for quite some time now. The company has confirmed that it would be one of the bidders for one of three gaming licenses in Japan and has been lobbying for the legalization of all Las Vegas-style gaming in Brazil. Las Vegas Sands has said that it might invest billions of dollars to the building of luxury incorporated resorts in both countries. It now appears that the company’s growth plans may include a new destination, should an chance for growth arise.
